Start with a few facts about your concrete job

The details that help most

1. Where the property is. A sloped foothills lot on the Westside, a walled yard in the Far East and an irrigated lot in the Mesilla Valley come with different soils, grades and access, which means the address settles a surprising amount ahead of the first visit.
2. What you want done, and about how large. A new or wider driveway, an RV or trailer pad, a back patio or pool deck, a front walk or steps, a shed or shop slab, or replacing concrete that has cracked or dropped. Rough length and width are enough.
3. What will use it. Cars only, or a work truck, motorhome, trailer, hot tub or shop equipment. Anything heavy calls for a deeper base, a thicker slab and more steel.
4. What covers the spot today. Gravel, desert landscaping, old concrete or asphalt. When something has to be removed first, demolition and haul-off become part of the scope.

Photos worth taking

Start with a pulled-back picture that takes in the entire work area along with the walls, gates and fall of the land. Close-ups of existing cracks, dropped sections or broken edges. Pictures of nearby roof canales, downspouts, cooler lines and sprinkler heads. And, if you have one, a photo taken during or right after a monsoon storm that shows where the water ran and where it stood. Water decides as much about a lasting slab as the concrete does.

What happens after you reach out

Next, the contractor comes out in person. Walking the lot, reading the grade and planning a route for the truck or pump settles questions a camera leaves open, and that is the point where a firm scope and number become possible. Ask for that scope in writing, covering base work, thickness, reinforcement, joint layout, drainage and finish, so any two bids can be compared item by item.
